Independent comparative study between different heating modes

  • Investment” corresponds to the initial investment (purchase of equipment).
  • “Maintenance” corresponds to maintenance costs (revision of the boiler, chimney sweeping, etc…).
  • “Operation” corresponds to operating costs (costs of electricity, gas, etc…).

The study was conducted in 2017 with a panel of 40 independent professionals for a house of 120 m2 in Vienna (Austria).

This study mainly shows that our heating solution is at the end (all costs included), although more expensive in consumption (due to the cost of energy), the most economic solution of all existing heating solutions. This is possible only because of the exceptional radiation rate of our heaters.

Synthesis of advantages and disadvantages of different types of heating

Table of synthesis of heating modes

Comparative Factors Infrared Heater (DEGXEL) Boiler Gas / Fuel (Central) Heat Pumps (Air Heaters) Fireplace / Stove / Insert
Personal time to manage the heating solution (wood supply, technician, chimney sweeping, radiator defrosting, stove cleaning, etc.)
Heat: soft and pleasant (absence of heat waves + homogeneous heat from floor to ceiling and throughout the room) (air/air Heat Pumps)
Ability to rapidly heat a room to a feeling of well-being
Healthy and homogeneous heat (no air stirring, no dust burning, no drying of air, no dust generation).
Operating noise (noise nuisances)

Renewing the air of the room without losing the benefit of heating (energy accumulated in the walls)

(air/air heat pumps)

Loss of living space = space for the heater emitter  and fuel production equipment (wall or ceiling)
Ecological dimension (fuel of fossil origin, level of CO2 emission, renewable energy origin) (if good yield)
Capacity of the heating mode to adapt (comfort + cost) to the fluctuating demand of power (winters +/- cold, insulation of the house which demands less power, etc …) (via fine control)
Ease of installation and expansion of the system after the initial installation to complement the main heating or other heating
Possibilities in terms of control (local, remote, centralization, room by room, custom programming)
Design and global possibilities of personalization of the device
Possibility to easily heat a house in its entirety with a unique heating solution (under renovation)
Safety (reliable and safe system)
Production of domestic hot water at the same time as heating (same appliance) for a standard range appliance
Infrared Heater (DEGXEL)
Boiler Gas / Fluel (Central)
Heat Pump
Fireplace / Stove / Insert
Total cost of the solution = Purchase + all costs (fuel supply, subscriptions, operation…) (after 10 years)
Gross cost of maintenance (maintenance, sweeping, etc.) (£ 0)
RESULT – SYNTHESIS (+1 point per green chip, – 1 point per red chip) 45 points 25 points 3 points 12 points

Gross cost of primary energy in the residential sector

Primary Energy Market Share (France) Energy efficiency (%) Power Calorific Energy (Kwh) Cost per unit (£)
Wood about 5% (total wood) 75% (high performance devices) 1600 KWh per dry wood (stere) £65 per stere + delivery +maintenance
Granulates about 5% (total wood) 90% (high performance stove) 4600 Kwh per tonne at 8% of moisture £270 per tonne + delivery +maintenance
Fuel about 14% 93% 10 Kwh per litre (PCI) £0.7  per litre + delivery +maintenance
Electricity about 35% (all origins) 100% 1 Kwh 13 pence per Kwh + subscription + WITHOUT maintenance
Gas about 44% 100% 1 Kwh 2.8 pence per Kwh + subscription + maintenance

The indicated prices are subject to change (variable cost of energy, supplier offers, etc.). It is difficult to go beyond this in terms of comparison, since many largely variable parameters (region, additional costs, maintenance, etc.) must be considered.

The% of distribution varies according to the year of construction of the housing, its function (residential, tertiary) and its nature (collective, individual).
